What is Coaching and how does it work?

What is coaching?

Coaching is a partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximise their personal and professional potential in their lives, work, businesses or organisations.

Unlike highly emotive, one off motivational events, coaching is an ongoing professional partnership that supports people with the necessary tools, knowledge and opportunities to:

  • Reach goals
  • Solve problems
  • Make decisions
  • Design a plan of action
  • Be the very best they can be
  • Remove barriers to progress
  • Watch for opportunities that arise
  • Maintain a healthy work/life balance

How does coaching work?
Coaching works because it assists the client become the absolute best they can be. Each coaching conversation has a focus that is chosen by the client. Throughout the course of the conversation, the coach partners the client to make shifts from where they are now to where they want to be.

Specifically, this is how coaching works with the coachee being the focus at all times:

Listening – fully to what you say, what you are trying to say and what you are not saying.

Sharing – with you ideas and views on your situation, dilemma or possible opportunities and helping to spur you on towards discovering what other choices are available to you.

Endorsing – as an outside voice full of encouragement and enthusiasm for you to be happy, healthy and enjoying your life and work.

What are some of the practicalities?

Coaching can be conducted by phone or face to face depending on location and what works best. Group coaching can be easily arranged via teleconferencing.

Client and coach can also maintain contact between coaching conversations via email, sms, fax or some other medium yet to be devised!

All conversations are kept confidential in accordance with the International Coach Federation Code of Ethics which can be viewed at:
